I think most graph databases are doing it wrong, anyway, emphasizing nodes over edges. This follows the lead of RDF, where you can't make assertions about edges at all, other than that an edge exists between two nodes. You have to reify the edge as a node, and talk about that.

It has me wondering if an edgelist in Mongo might be superior, once you take into account the warping of your representation. I haven't worked through the performance implications of realistic queries at this point, but...
