I think it depends on a lot and can certainly make things worse, too. (ALso, The Ratio (tm) serves as an implict downvote counter and that seems to be a black joke of attention.)

It's kinda funny for me, because I can see pretty clearly what different people follow me for and how this affects things, with a few exceptions; mostly, I guess, because it's still a small group and there are discrete associated groupings and some super-groups.

Most of my followers are silent. I'd have to guess which tweet topic they joined for (which are diverse) and record that, then detect similarly when they leave. You have more followers than I do by a lot, so your different experience is interesting.
