The thing about illusory moral superiority is that everyone tends to think they would act one way when tested, but they’d end up disappointing themselves before rationalizing away the choices they actually made.

One group of intellectuals recognizes this and seems to think, “see that’s how the world works, fuck it and take what you can get.” Another group says, “well, fine, let’s change the structures then, nothing is true and everything is permitted.”

Of course these are not the only groups and none of this is as simple as that. Everything is a puzzle with an absurd number of missing pieces. But you can at least try to align yourself with the people who actually seem to care about other people.

Edit: I meant to say *most people*. And even that may be a bit harsh. But really, heroism is hard especially when the type of fortitude it requires is marathon-level endurance without the glory of a movie soundtrack playing through a montage.
