1/ This is exactly why I wish @TwitterAPI exposed a <mute phrase> endpoint. It's a bit unfounded and demands testing, but my hypothesis would be that, if I could do stochastic and ephemeral phrase muting, it could *increase* the visibility of things that demand your attention.https://twitter.com/rakyll/status/1160745342154919936 …

2/ Why? Because I've heard endlessly from tech people in this area (especially those in the C-suite), "I unfollow people who talk about politics." On one hand, I think that's self-indulgent bubble logic; on the other, it's exhausting, so I get it (even if I don't approve.)

3/ The point is that people in tech are aware -- or, more accurately, believe -- that political expression isn't going to win you many friends and may lose you some opportunities.https://thoughts.johnbnelson.com/tech/dear_sam_altman.html …

4/ Again, I don't necessarily think it will and I certainly don't think it's a great way to condition expression, but the incentive structure exists and for all the bullshit "virtual signalling" assertions, at least in tech there's a chilling effect. I want to make that go away.
