At least from my perspective in the graph, it's this weird, self-reinforcing, antagonistic relationship between tech people and academics.

The former conflates credentials and associated bestowed authority for clericalism, and fundamentally undervalues the sheer amount of deep exploratory effort academics put into trying to understand the world they live in.

The later tends generally transmutes their frustrations with the institutional problems of academia as well as their limited reach into resentment towards people in tech, whose are richly rewarded for exploitation (in the sense of the explore-exploit dichotomy).

Again, this is really just my very subjective experience of being extremely online. But, it really boils down to two groups of people who misunderstand each other and project their frustrations accordingly. (Although I wouldn't say the levels of misunderstanding are equivalent.)
