The instinct to say “yes, I know that already” during conversations is a bad one. (By conversations I mean people you actually know and want to here from, not folks explaining your discipline to you without solicitation.)

Heck, I'm not a statistician, but I tutored it 50 years ago, and I bet I don't know the full glory of StdDev, not to mention what I have forgotten! Thinking you really know stats is highly correlated with foot-and-mouth disease and retracted papers.

I can attest that the more time I spend studying stats, the less I *think* I know about it (even though obviously I've learned *something* in these past handful of years
