So what did these shy kids do to make friends before social media? There have always been plenty of them.

I think that's the whole seduction. Social media affords them (us) the opportunity to construct whatever mask they want, thinking the performance will translate into relationships they desire — but it need not work out that way. (Just started boyd's paper though.)
