The discussion touched on something criticism that I run into often. Saying “these communication systems induce harm” is not the same as saying “let’s go back to before, an imagined utopia.”
“Companies that treat human beings as resources outcompete those that don’t (rough quote.” I’ve said the same dozens of time on here and hearing other people say the same is always a bit disheartening, even though we’re trying to prevent it!
Rough quote: “You can’t opt out of participation in these persuasive technologies because you’re embedded in it regardless, even if you turn it off.”
A recipe: - Race to capture your attention. - Race to get you to need attention.
Ignores the essential middle part of the equation... The integration of opportunity & ambition into a whole greater than its sum.
What I find problematic is the assumption that experiences can be compartmentalized. This is patently false. Our brain is constantly integrating, working on the big picture. One cannot simply be entertained.
Hrm. Where are you swing the compartmentalized argument?
I model the essential element of distributed intelligence as a vertex with several inputs & multitude of outputs. Attention-grabbing apps say "You need a break" but we can't opt out; we can't get a break. We can only seek different abstractions for working the core inquiry.
Understand this is to understand rage.
Oh yea I agree with all that
From what you tweeted, it sounds like a great talk. Studying human computer teaming on large scale is really eye opening.
It was. They blew up mine though haha. I had a 4pm lightning talk that covers similar ground.
