I don’t know how I feel about programming bootcamps because my autodidactic method was mostly a consequence of having access to a computer and some books during an early age. What I do know is that people with similar biographies who talk shit about them should generally stfu.

Alice: “I’m going to learn to program at a bootcamp!” — Bob: “Bootcamps are a scam. Real programmers learn by reading the books I read and coding their own operating system in emacs.” — Carol: “That’s great. ‘Hello, Carol!’ LMK if you need help!” — Be Carol.

Bootcamps are totally a scam (except for a very select few) and my answer to that is community college + in-person mentorship + MOOCs. Learning on your own is super hard and I think it should be part of the process but not the whole answer.

My hot take is that they make the idea of programming accessible. Like, they wildly over-promise and are expensive and your Rx is better, but I don't think they are valueless because the fantasy party helps you overcome initial reluctance for some things.https://twitter.com/generativist/status/960226500816510977 …

2/ To some degree, I think marketing convinced me – who didn't know anything about programming – that I could learn about programming. That was a very good thing.

That said, community colleges are wildly under-used and we should do way more of them.

Also, the conclusion to this thread was kinda, Data Science Bootcamps are manipulatively wrong, so... ...yea, I'm nothing if not ever-contradictory.https://twitter.com/generativist/status/960226510178152448 …

12/ But, you're not going to "know" data science. Don't expect that. It will be disappointing and you may end up quitting prematurely.

I generally agree with this though I wish there were more examples of good programs. I wonder if high wages for software engineers & managers is keeping great potential teachers out of these sorts of roles?

I looked at teaching at our CC part or full-time and the pay for a PT class-load was close to minimum wage if you factored in any reasonable amount of prep/grading work. FT salaries were in the $50k/year range.
