1/ I'm glad you said this, because I think it's a pretty common behavior (at least for extremely online / remote work twitter). I don't have lists, but I do notice relatively quickly if someone I really appreciate or respect or both unfollows me. https://twitter.com/ExAstrisUmbra/status/1143915716770320385 …

2/ And, although it's not something I like admitting, I'm left thinking: why? Did I say something fucked up? Did I make light of something terribly dark? There's no feedback there and I wish there was, if only to course correct (if need be).https://twitter.com/devonzuegel/status/1093304038391611392 …

3/ But, asking explicitly, "why?" feels very out-of-bounds. If you did offend them, they made a decision that you're challenging, even if you don't mean too. And if it was milder, you're still violating some hard-to-articulate norm.https://twitter.com/TheAnnaGat/status/1093307492698869760 …

5/ And, people also do unfollow to make twitter better as an experience for themselves. (I occasionally prune people I never interact with and who never interact with me, so long as they're not saying stuff I want to lurk.)https://twitter.com/AdamSinger/status/1138675749597040640 …

Adam SingerVerified account @AdamSingerReset Twitter by unfollowing 5K & following 400 to start. That was a decent amount of effort but looks worth it this is way better. Raw feed @ 400 feels way more manageable esp knocking out all the auto Tweeting accts. Prob go back to 7-800 as target. DMs open if need anything.Show this thread1 reply 0 retweets 6 likesShow this thread -

Michael T. Bacon @MichaelTBaconI find the norms around follow/unfollow and how to interpret them on this site to be completely inscrutable. I'm sure I've pissed people off regularly by doing the wrong thing. Sometimes I unfollow just cause I need a break, though. It's not an "unfriend" thing. https://twitter.com/generativist/status/1143918313975635968 …4 replies 0 retweets 1 likeShow this thread -

I unfollow for things that are too emotional etc. I don't like content that I feel is trying to provoke my envy or enrage me. I have no idea what bad thing everybody is upset about today and I like it that way. 1/2

I also unfollow because my interests change. I've learned enough about some topic or viewpoint and now I'm curious about something else. I get why people see unfollowing as personal though. I'm sure for many it is. 2/2

Yea. I think that's a problem with the granularity of follows, too. There's a place for "follows inactively" that lists don't really fulfill because spammers made lists bad. Like, something that lets me (and other people) trace influences and facilitate discovery.

facilitate discovery: bingo! I want to auto follow the key thought leaders in a field, without spending months manually walking the network
