1/ I'm glad you said this, because I think it's a pretty common behavior (at least for extremely online / remote work twitter). I don't have lists, but I do notice relatively quickly if someone I really appreciate or respect or both unfollows me. https://twitter.com/ExAstrisUmbra/status/1143915716770320385 …

I unfollow for things that are too emotional etc. I don't like content that I feel is trying to provoke my envy or enrage me. I have no idea what bad thing everybody is upset about today and I like it that way. 1/2

I also unfollow because my interests change. I've learned enough about some topic or viewpoint and now I'm curious about something else. I get why people see unfollowing as personal though. I'm sure for many it is. 2/2

Realized I was blocked by someone I had considered a good online friend some years ago. No idea what happened, horrified to even look up our interaction history. Dust in the wind, now.

Yea. Super disorienting. One part of me thinks, "it shouldn't be, that's silly!" And another part yells back, "nope, it's a pretty basic aspect of our social selves."

Totally agreed. I do most of my "following" through lists, which has led to many unnecessarily-awkward virtual social situations (like a regular correspondent can't DM me because they're on a list, or I miss updates when an account goes private, etc.)
Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Honestly, doesn't this whole thread embody the same dynamic as in-person relationships? Just, Twitter allows it all to happen waaaaaaay faster, and with people that you don't actually know all that well?

I mean -- adolescent me would have *loved* to have been able to ask a very similar "WHYYYY?!" question to a lot of people (read, girls). But, it was totally not possible and, to be honest, probably would totally not have been at all a good idea.
