Weight lifting friends: I was in an incident five years ago that herniated L3/L4. Since then I've tried getting back to deadlifts & squats; but, each time, I eventually re-injure myself. I think it's time to recognize I can't do either anymore. So... ...what can I do instead?

Seriously, not getting to do either makes my workouts feel so ineffective. But there's only so many times I can fail to learn the same lesson because I want to ignore it. (I mean, the Doc who saw me back then even said, "no, you can't anymore.")

Pistol squats and other body-weight one-legged versions of both? Much reduced strain on back while still offering progressions and strength building.

Maybe? I do like pistol squats. I think as long as I resist the urge to level up beyond body weight it's probably okay...
