Weight lifting friends: I was in an incident five years ago that herniated L3/L4. Since then I've tried getting back to deadlifts & squats; but, each time, I eventually re-injure myself. I think it's time to recognize I can't do either anymore. So... ...what can I do instead?

Pistol squats and other body-weight one-legged versions of both? Much reduced strain on back while still offering progressions and strength building.

Maybe? I do like pistol squats. I think as long as I resist the urge to level up beyond body weight it's probably okay...

Tennis balls help ease & readjust if it slips. I can't lift after a sacral injury. Resistance training, dance, speed walking (jogging causes pain), and yoga. Mountain biking (don't sit on the seat) & climbing are still bordering. It's not an easy adjustment.

This is a terrible question for Twitter. And while
#notanexpert I would begin building strength with a very slow series of progressive exercises, and never move into pain. And I would start here: https://www.dragondoor.com/b41/Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Find a good physical therapist. I’ve avoided surgery several times w PT, with near complete recovery all but once (shoulder surgery). Also weight trained for decades and still do (68).
