The financial challenge of graduate school is a very real thing, but it correspondingly allows for a unique level of ~free exploration within that constraint.

Yea, that's what a lot of people outside don't understand. You'll never have more time for and spend more energy on idea exploration than during grad school.

Tell me about it. One of my "connecting the dots" moments was when we started iterating and improving on "how" we built and shipped. The iterations and experiments go on, and we are mostly learning for ourselves.

This is one reason I tell people that academia won’t necessarily make them better at industry! They’re different skill sets - and some cross over of course but they both take conscious effort to curate.

The Academy does this to itself. Our contribution becomes so narrow defined that only a small subset cares. That's hardly a recipe for tech transfer & business development.
