*watching The Matrix* Me, high school: “This is incredible and explains everything!” Me, now: “Okay, so, Neo gets a call from Morpheus — who he really does not know at all — that tells him to meet under a bridge in the rain, and he’s all like, ‘oh yea, sure, seems legit.’”

But they met on a bulletin board, in a time when only l33t people hung out on bulletin boards If Morpheus had sent him an ICQ message, that would be more suspect

I think it's interesting to consider how the tech constraints of BBSes helped create the culture around them. There was both a spatial and temporal limitation, which we now realize may have been a *help* as opposed to a hindrance.

Compare/contrast the culture around BBSes, which were almost always local and maxed out at ~4 simultaneous lines, to the giant, national AOL chatrooms circa 1993/94. Instantly a completely different kind of youth culture emerged on AOL (sexting, warez, CC phishing, etc.)

But hey we got "a/s/l" as a shorthand so it wasn't all bad Sometimes when I'm in a garden and I hear birds chirping around me, I imagine them all just mindlessly blaring "A/S/L? A/S/L?" It's fun to be me.
