Damn that errant comma...

Kind of depends how fast you're going when you miss the moon - solar system escape velocity at 1 AU is 42.1km/sec
-
A really cool thing about my twitter social graph position is that inevitably someone does the math :)

That quote was on an inspirational quote poster in the hallway of my undergrad dorm. I put a homemade poster next to it that said that the stars are much farther away than the moon, and when you shoot for the moon and miss you get Apollo 13.
-
My poster was then taken down and replaced with a passive-aggressive statement about having positive things to say or not saying anything at all. ...huh, maybe I use Twitter because it reminds me of college.

"Shoot for the moon, if you miss, you have wasted millions of dollars that could have been spent on saving lives"

Correction: "Shoot for the moon and if you miss, you will be in Mars"

Which the moon is part of, yes

To be fair even grounded back on Earth, you're still just as "among the stars" as you would be had you reached escape velocity given the relevant, relative cosmic distances...

I grew up with “shoot for the stars - even if you fall short you’ll catch the moon!” - more of a failed probe than an errant rocket sort of ideal I guess
