1/ I agree: memorization is not understanding. But, it does afford low-latency cache look-ups. And, amortized, it often lets you spend *more* time on problem solving using new ideas and techniques — where you pay your real tuition — than you could have without memorization.

Recall is the starter-kit cognitive skill. Ask? I'll tell. We incorporate training naturally matching what we wish to recall with a mechanization. Repetition establishes. The kind of mechanism we choose makes a difference in retention. Practicing agency beats mindless drill.

Recall is where we learn our symbol sets. This is red. That is orange. We learn quickly to overload symbols. That way we can convey a lot in a compressed way. However symbol overload contains cultural biases.
