My apparently terrible take is that this season was just as good as any of the others and that fantasy is a process that never ends but TV series do.

The showrunners were quite good at adapting from rich primary reference material but amazingly bad at bending arcs creatively. In any case, the books are still orders of magnitude better in every way.

Fair. I stopped reading the books so I wouldn’t know. But even then, I’m not sure I’ve ever had a book that I loved that was better as a tv show or movie so I kinda feel like expectations were off. Like, books are bigger because you’re imagination gets to synthesize more details.

As always with high fantasy and sci-fi, text allows for a vastly richer inner narrative of characters and a vastly richer outer narrative of the world around them. Fortunately, the shows effectively became an alternate parallel universe so the books are still worth reading.

Mostly I stopped reading because of phdlife work but that was the minor other reason. When they deviated, it made me want to do both less.
