(That’s wrong in that either the value of the network doesn’t decrease because the cost is born by users or in that it’s true only in the discounted value that incorporates future expectations...but there is something in there I think.)

Do you mean that the value of the network will decline once it's very big? Diminishing returns kind of thing?

the underlying model seems pretty wrong. effects might have more to due with causal structure -- a system's capacity to integrate information (see Integrated Information Theory)
