Yea. Having been inside those communities for so many years, it does engender real animosity. I never figured out a good way to navigate that.

tangential...I hate whole "praying for you!" (having breast removed next week thanks to some cells gone cancery!). I'm like listen bitches your skygod has zero to do w/skills + expertise that surgeons, nurses, researchers, etc have devoted themselves to. my survival=0% due to god

Yea. If you’re religious it’s a kind thing to say. If you’re not — even if it’s sincere — it’s an imposition. (And fuck those cells gonna cancery!)

Exactly, as a patient you have a tremendous amount of fortitude to get through treatment, but we should never consider the individuals *attitude* to be determining factor for whether they survive a disease. The science has to rise up to meet you, fighter or not.

For me, I hate the fighting/battle analogies regarding cancer. I feel like little space is left to speak the truth of my daily existence which is mired in chronic pain that is not helped by “fighting”. It’s not about fighting or acquiescence - it’s just living with my reality.

So the fact that I'm "a fighter" makes me immune to cancer? You promise me I'll definitely be ok? It comes from a good place but it can be hurtful. I've seen relatives dying of terminal illness- they knew they weren't going to be ok. Be there through pain, esp when it's hard.
