PDF assumes you know the dimensions of your display device and preferred formatting style at the time of publication. EPUB allows for changes in the style of headings etc and dimensions of the document. It's more like LaTeX or HTML that way. There's a need for both, no?

I'm fine with that. Except soooo many EPUBs are made from materials which won't scale, so it ends up being illegible.

.epub is just packaged HTML. Open one up with WinZip or any other archiving tool. You can use calibre (FOSS) or Scrivener (small $$) to create one. Probably easier with Scrivener, you just write your doc normally and click the 'build epub' button.pic.twitter.com/VVYDU6Wmhp
