When people say "life is hard", what are they comparing it to?

The way I see it is, since people aren't born with an absolute scale for measuring these things, they can only do relative comparisons vs past states. Which explains the complaints of the privileged, trivial things (from majority's perspective) really should impact them more!

This is the cognitive interrupt I've installed to take over whenever I see people complaining about what from my perspective, seems completely ridiculous. The real problem is unwillingness to acknowledge advantage, being condescending, thinking selves superior etc.
