“you have it easy [compared to x]”, isn't that mostly used to keep people in their place? Where x is not a member of the discussion, I mean.

Yes, I think so, with the "mostly" qualifier. But I also think sometimes even the most caring people get frustrated spending energy on the reassurance and may sloppily try to break the cycle.
