2/ A long time ago I read something about how sparrows will preen themselves mid-flight if they see danger. Like, it resets their affective state to the ground level before they have to fly again. I have no idea if that's true or not but, *gestures everywhere* it us.

(I can't remember the source or find a reference for that. I think it may have been in
@mattwridley's Red Queen, but I read in high school so: twitter reader beware, tweeter could be full of shit. It sounds like a fixed-action pattern or something though.)Show this thread -
Couldn't find it in The Red Queen, but lol — should have just checked wikipedia, first: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preening_(bird)#Secondary_functions …

As opposed to when that the world was an unproblematic utopia? Everything is fine. The shrieking fearmongers are the crazy ones.

Fearmongers may contribute to the current entropic delirium, but they are not the principle driver. Structurally, there are a lot of things failing — as there always has been. But hyper-optimization has carved out and sold all the slack in graduated tranches. Robustness, lost.

It’s so true. Some days I read some crap(s) happening in the news and I walk outdoors & am forced to interact w/ people & I feel this same way. In my mind I want to like shake ‘Merica/ the world and be like WAKE THE EFF UP!!! Stop staring at the cave shadows, ffs!

Canvassing for planned parenthood/aclu last summer was surreal. I'd be bombarded with messaging about how the sky is falling on here and in the real world most people didn't care. Very eye opening
