For the past (many) years, I've started my day by spending an hour learning something new that *wasn't* related to my dissertation (or anything else I was working on). I haven't done that in two weeks. I'm just now realizing how useful a practice it is and need to start again.

Any interesting patterns you've picked up in choosing a thing to learn about?

No, other than it only helps me if it's *not* related to what I'm working on. And twitter actually often provides a motivating "oh gee, that's cool."

I've never made this a habit, but I've found the same pattern in my learning. Learning things unrelated to my present source of work stress /anxiety is ... healing, somehow.

Yea. It gives you some perspective. When you get to focused, the world narrows in a way that — while often useful — is booby-trapped.
