At the same time, as a lark, i designed a survey experiment where i varied a hypothetical political candidate's driving behavior. Overall, there were no treatment effects. But when i broke down the treatment groups by party id, the results were huge.

republicans really didn't like the candidate who was described as driving less or the candidate who was described as not driving at all. they thought those candidates were less trustworthy and less patriotic.

And this means a lot for a car-reduced future. Because when there's partisan political resistance to something like that, paradigm shifts are near impossible. FFS, they're STILL trying to repeal Obamacare.

i think the question is what ties to identity and what doesn't. No one is crowing about "light bulb freedom" anymore. There's a very real case to be made that cars are something that people identify with in a distinct way, rather than negative affect for liberals.
