We invented math so we could debate with precision only to discover that mathematics churns up disorder as well.

Simplification is an act of arrogance, of false confidence. If in order to act we must stretch ourselves, then let us at least endeavor to be kind.

That’s what the Daoists were always going on about - you can’t really grok the Dao, so you should accept that your model is necessarily lossy and try to model as little as possible. Even kindness is tricky because you can’t know the outcome. They value being natural, ish?

Yes, interesting, isn't it? I rather think that we should be modest about the degree that we invest in our adopted models. When we feel the strongest impulse to defend them are typically the very moment we should consider their weaknesses.

We don't likely know what kindness is or appreciate the range of its expression. Range & dynamics are what interest me. Whenever I sense Gibbs phenomena in the form of anarchy or chaotic noise, I wonder what switch is about to throw.

Oh wow, please let there be a german word for this feeling because it needs a good handle.

In my family we call it the Magnus panic.

TIL "Gibbs Phenomena", I didn't realize that sense of discontinuity had a name! I've been thinking a lot about how autistic brains seem to have a knack for identifying discontinuity, but we translate that to other domains without realizing what's really happening. Hmm.

I'm autistic. Ha! I'm in the right trade then.

same, to be clear! And yeah I've found that a lot of us seem to have a lot of deep thoughts around this space, and I'm fascinated by that!

I've had a few conversations about my work with neurodivergent people at conferences etc over the past few years. The time between my explanation and "oh, yea, I know what you're talking about" often feels almost instantaneous. (And, the interest is way higher.)

I'm curious...Have you ever think about your explanation in the context of rage cycles?

This thread got me thinking the last few days. Bear with me. First, I love the idea of mapping mathematical concepts to feelings. I come from the life sciences, and have always found the beauty of living systems emerging from the laws of thermodynamics deeply comforting.
