This is such a painful and common experience in grad school, and it seems like afterwards if you say in academia, geographic constraints make it continue. I feel like it's hard to fully appreciate at the start.

Um, this is a life problem not a grad school problem. Maybe one day you won't be able to take leave from work or will have to live far away. Thinking of these problems as unique to grad school or a "symptom" of grad school is problematic.

Lung cancer is not unique to cigarette smokers. Cigarette smokers experience lung cancer at higher rates. Pointing out the latter is not problematic.

Grad students miss births of relatives at higher rates?

Grad students -- because of overwork, small stipends, and geographical relocation -- miss out on the opportunity to see their families at a rate that exceeds most other professions, and far higher than they probably anticipate at the start.

I still think a grad student has it better than a private in the military, but maybe that's just my experience talking.
