Missing my sisters baby shower and whole birth has made me realize some of the sacrifices I made going to grad school. I used to lived with my first nephew, now I’m scared my second won’t know who I am 
Lung cancer is not unique to cigarette smokers. Cigarette smokers experience lung cancer at higher rates. Pointing out the latter is not problematic.

Economic precocity and overwork culture formalized by institutions is bad. Like, I don't get to see my family as much now for a different reason -- I moved to my fiancees coast. But I was a lot more cognizant of that sacrifice than I was of the ones associated with grad school.

I only argue that it's problematic to think the problem is rooted in grad school and not just a larger problem with society in our overall work-life balance. I mean I had to miss the birth of my second son, I wasn't in grad school and it wasn't unique. So

Grad students miss births of relatives at higher rates?

Grad students -- because of overwork, small stipends, and geographical relocation -- miss out on the opportunity to see their families at a rate that exceeds most other professions, and far higher than they probably anticipate at the start.
