1/ One aspect of publish or perish that I think is under-discussed: shitty writing. Writing well is a learnable skill. Most graduate students master it. But, in practice, it demands LOTS OF TIME. And, that's hard to justify given the endless frenetic struggle.

3/ I don't have a magical prescription to make this possible. It's basically a collective action problem. But, I just wanted to put it out there because I don't think this particular aspect of publish-or-perish and it's negative impact on our workloads is discussed enough.

This is definitely true. We see too many theses that “write to impress” but actually do the opposite. Being readable is not “dumbing down”.
