Concept that I've been toying with: momentary "protected" mode for individual tweets... turns on profile protection before tweet is sent (so it doesn't appear in the public API) and turns off after tweet is sent (so the tweet is still engage-able in your public-facing timeline).

Out of curiosity... this tweet was sent while in profile protected mode, which I'll turn back off in a moment.
