Every time I read, "who is this for?" answered with, "newbies or experts alike," I close the book and don't revisit it. Those are two very different audiences. It's desperately hard to do well. Almost no one does.

Yea, that's why it's so hard. Books are linear because that's the medium's physical constraints. But, learning and pedagogy is not. (Which is why I think adaptive learning mediums — smart spaced repetition, etc — are really exciting.)
