Even if you’re trying to do that, don’t _say_ that. It’s terrible branding. Say something more like “for people who want to do/know/whatever this really cool thing.”

Counterexample: ML for the working programmer by Larry C. Paulson. The first chapters are easy, but around chapter 9, lambda calc is introduced in one paragraph, and chapter 10 is a sequent calculus proof system.

It gets away with this because Paulson is an excellent writer and because there is a path from beginner to expert throughout the book. Another example that comes to mind is Knuth's "The art of computer programming" which can be read at many levels.
