That's why I'm having A LOT of trouble saying no. My mom is the most earnest human being alive, it'd be very difficult to navigate while presenting.

Just tell them it’s 7 hours long, there’s no food, and you have to stay for the whole thing. If they still go, they deserve to be there

Haha. My Mom would respond, "oh that's no problem at all, I'll make everyone something."

I had all 4 of my parents, one set of grandparents, and a few friends. They had no idea what was happening but it was so good to look up and see them blindly rooting for me. And they heard congrats Dr P with me the for the 1st time :)

The manual says that your defense is a party, you are a specialist now who is showing off to the committee. No reason to exclude anyone, just go and enjoy it. You can do it and everyone you love should be part of it.

I was lucky in that my sister spoke to my parents and convinced them not to go to my defense (she herself came, which was great for moral support). I believe she said something to the effect of, the defense will be stressful and it would be better to just go to the graduation.
