I feel like having cancer (or any major trauma) when you are younger severs the connection between biological age and psychological age in a way that usefully helps you see clearly: there are so many dimensions to the latter. We're all five and fifty over some different aspects.

Experiencing unexpected trauma later in life can also make you feel like a terrified, helpless 5 year old.

Yes, it can. My experience is that there is very little relationship between age and how you deal with trauma. Like, the bravest person I've ever met was 12. Some of the most terrified were much older than me. Physical appearance hides too many details.
