1/ I'm sure the STS folks can say this better but, Single-author papers or projects aren't interdisciplinary. They can't be.

I come more from a concrete sciences side, but I wanna disagree. My graduate work is in Photonics which is both it's own field and an interdisciplinary one. I'm trained in physics, my current Dept is electrical eng. I any photonics work draws heavily on both of those & materials

Science and the work I do wouldnt be possible without all three (and is relevant to all three). Any paper I author, even if it's independent will still need to draw on at least 2 of those fields

Yea, @kaznatcheev challenged me similarly, and by the end of that subthread (and others), I think I ended up:https://twitter.com/generativist/status/1111784132944654336 …

Instead, it's kinda that calling it interdisciplinary before enumerating the disciplines as some quasi-intersection almost...reproduces procrustean boundaries in the process?

I think that makes sense, and that it is more true in softer sciences; when boundaries overlap in physics we can know that we're switching from our usual model to theirs and why it works to do that. Social sciences have to deal with people, they don't model as well as particles

That's a great point, I need to draw some distinction between physical sciences and social ones — different issues. And yes, they do not :( The first time I read the quote below, I thought it was vapid and wrong. Every year, agree with it more.https://twitter.com/microjudgments/status/1108774821150679041 …
