More common path is sequential training: expert in one field who subsequently learns another. Most likely due to academic structure, though.

I would agree that expertise in more than one field would require cross-collaboration and cross-training. But after that training is done, you can still have single author papers.

Everyone learning about more than one field needs to interact with people to get that knowledge. But although most researchers focus on 1 field (it's the most energy-efficient way to "success") there are some who do more than one. And they run into the same problems as the teams.
