1/ There is a truly magical shift in perspective that occurs when you're able to move from "oh no, this scholar stole my idea [ten years before I started grad school!" towards "oh wow, look, a fellow traveler!" Broken parts of academia inhibit this transition.

1/2 way through my master thesis I realised many points I wanted to make had been made in a book I had purposely dismissed years before because a) i thought it was bad, & b) it was too close to my own ideas & i wanted to come to my own conclusions. Humbling & valuable experience.

I realised it that a) i was being intellectually arrogant and that while it may have been wrong about some things it was a great book, and b) i was now free to use it in the lit rev and move in to new territory in which to build my own ideas
