Just FYI: If you're going to DM someone with a moderate number of followers, please say more than "hi" or "hello." In any other context, that's polite. But, most of my daily DMs are spam or people calling me a garbage person for idle thoughts I posted, so 'hi' isn't much signal.

(I've never had that happen to me, but) My instinct is that DMs should be tweet-scale emails, not a chat window, but is this somewhere where different cohorts might have different etiquette?

The only time I think it's a chat window is for groups. Or, for new connections, after a tweet-sized email, some things are useful to chat about in a way that doesn't expose your email.

The "hi" intros are frustrating, because I've had several experiences where the person wanted to ask a good question that they felt awkward about asking publicly. So I try to respond to "hi." But 9/10 there's a cam girl reveal.

You didn’t know him 15 years ago. Jury is still out. (To be clear to the trolls, this is a joke and Johnny is a treasure — usually).

Hahah. Yea, I was thinking of that image you sent me from Freshman year the other day. One day, I'll post it with the commentary: "You can reinvent yourself as many times as you want!"
