Your contention is that only the reaction is deplorable. That's like kicking an angry dog and then voicing strong condemnation of the ensuing fit of barking.

My contention is that consequences of the reaction are predictable and harmful, and that it requires finding a (possibly intractable) balance because the opposite prescription — don't talk about identity — has very effectively been used to demobilize people and obscure reality.
