1/ When someone uses the phrase "identity politics" derisively, I almost immediately write them off as a fool. But, in doing so, I think it's important not to also dismiss the idea that — beyond a certain level of emphasis — it becomes a very useful vector for reactionary attack.pic.twitter.com/jRYsd6ET1x

2/ Like, I have no idea what the "correct level" of discussion is and I don't think anyone does. But, when you mentally set it to [any level], you're probably going to end up working against your desired outcomes.

3/ Being morally right guarantees nothing. "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice," is a laudable sentiment but, "in the long run we are all dead" is a much more useful heuristic.

4/ (And yes, just to be clear, fuck the people who are seriously using the phrase "black privilege." But, right now, I'm mostly thinking about how it continues to be a successful strategy instead of an absurd one.)

I can't believe people are actually saying "black privilege" about this Smullett debacle. The same people who are enraged at the phrase "white privilege" no doubt. Good thread btw, I'm stuck on the absurdity at the moment though

This is what comes from separating people by race, accentuating the separation, and then pitting the different groups against each other. Anyone who participated in that process should feel responsible for the resulting nonsense. Cooperation does not follow from resentment.

Identity politics did not separate people by race — literally centuries of bullshit supremacy and economic policy did that. Treating people you associate with and know as individuals is a passable way to live. But, ignoring sociological disparities isn't in any way corrective.

Ah, my mistake, you did not. What were you referring to by, "[t]his is what comes from separating people by race, accentuating the separation, and then pitting the different groups against each other."

Exactly what it says: People who create division and enmity between sunsets of society for whichever reason they claim to justify it. This problem is so old that Dante put this kind of people in the 8th circle of hell: the sowers of scandal and schism.

I can't help but comment: it's telling that you immediately associate those people to Identity politics.
