There was a product we used for sharing pitch documents which tracked email opens etc. I was always waiting for a VC with infosec background to pull us up on it. Never happened.

Used to be common practice for mass mailings, at least. Doing it individually somehow feels like a much worse offense.

Yea, that's just it. I expect it in newsletters and I kinda don't care because they're using it for mass metrics in a way that I can think of as useful. As a direct read receipt -- nope, that's different.

It's relatively common but has high error rates. Some email clients pre-load images in emails (type I) and many people block inline images (type II).
