The idea that culture is something that "just happens" and not something produced by very motivated parties is easily the most mistaken belief I had in my formative years.

Which is dangerous because lots of people are trying to manipulate it and their desires and collective ability to do so successfully are not uniform.

Again, like you said, it's a very complex process. But the production doesn't need to arc towards some happy {next , end}-point, and "it just happens" sometimes obscures that.
