1/ On aspect of twitter that I enthusiastically celebrate:
There are a bunch of people on here that I would want to work with (not limited to #phdlife) because twitter allows me to gradually *discovery* how they *think*.

This is an interesting point bc I feel like I know some of my mutuals in a weirdly deep way bc I am able to discover how they think, and learn some very specific details about their life. But at the same time, idk that much about them (in a general sense)

Yea. Even directly in my field, there are people on here who I haven't read one formal output they've produced... ...but I value their opinions and takes because I've seen how they think. (And, because I just like them.)

Like, the latter part may induce errors by social homophily. But, I'm really not convinced its worse than errors by methodological and institutional constraints. In fact, to some degree, I think it's both sources are uncorrelated and the mixture is useful!

omg yeah there are plenty of people here where I've never read any papers they've published, but I still have a sense of what they're doing and what they're thinking bc of this hell site

It's one of the few unalloyed goods of this website!

Oh, P.S. that reminds me: I'd be curious about your take on *I Contain Multitudes.* It was one of those books where I kept thinking "wow, this is incredible!" followed by, "oh, well, wait, sometimes popsci does stretch the truth a lot for...presentable coherence.*

tbh I read it a few years ago, but don't remember it 100%
I do remember thinking it was pretty accurate, aka the truth wasn't stretched too too much, and the book was great.1 reply 0 retweets 1 like
that answer makes me happy.
