2/ Example: Lots of fool-highlighting accounts use screenshots to avoid the direct engagement that comes from quoted tweets. But that cost is generally good friction.

3/ But what about if they delete the offending post? Great! That's how it should work. Attenuating the signal of abusive content is desirable; AMPLIFICATION IS NOT!

4/ Okay, what about for fact-checking? Tweet screenshots aren't verifiable. PROLIFERATION CREATES THE PHOTOSHOP SPOOFING VULNERABILITY. (P.S. If archival is important, use

5/ Isn't classification hard? Maybe? The task is easy -- someone in computer vision 101 could pull it off. The expense is the challenge. But, you could run it as deferred post processing. Violations get auto-deleted with warnings.

6/ I'm no innocent in this, either. I've used them. At this point, they've become so pervasive that they're no longer even perceived as a user-generated dark-pattern. But they obviously are.

I'm not sure it isn't signal boosting though -- I think it's just less measurable by engagement stats. Seeing Kirk et al. captures in my feed inflates their visibility for me; takes more of my attention; and, makes subsequent interactions in that arena more salient.

OTOH, I do think that (without evidence to point to) Kruse's constant criticism of D'Souza may have worked w.r.t. D'Souza. Like an immunological response creating a cyst around a parasite. But, I'm not sure that's very scalable.

But I think it works out the same way. Like, I'll follow and like someone who repeatedly dunks on some particular strain of stupid for schadenfreude. And then they'll keep producing more of it. And that works the other way too. Trolls get more followers for the troll

As to the latter, I don't think retweet/quote is less salient, more like as salient. But I can block them completely with twitters content management for particular offenders.

Yea. He's also thought about this a bunch. IIRC there's a blog post somewhere where he gives his arguments for doing so.
