Who is doing academic work on (what I perceive to be) a rise in preppers; their self-fulfilling fantasies of social collapse; and, the constant fapping over the idea that they'll get to "justifiably" kill people soon?
Do you think this is a new trend and/or one that it is on the rise? It strikes me that we’ve seen this throughout history (e.g., Y2K). Though as I think about it, perhaps there is some correlation between the public’s perceived erosion of political systems and desire to prep.
I really don't know and I would like to look into it more when I am not on shit union station/amtrak wifi. But, I agree with your paired points. Preppers are very much not new and Y2K seems like a plausible recent event (and 9/11, prob).
But, a lot of the current prepper tortured imaginations seem like really really dangerous and corrosive trust erosion on identity boundaries...
I think that’s a really good point. The proliferation of platforms and publications where this thinking is effectively normalized does strike me as problematic.
There are three of these magazines in the Union Station, DC Hudson news store. Two doors down, there is a store called "America!" with the exclamation point. Both of these visions are trending towards the new Apple Pie.
