Complex systems as an approach loves to identify and explore emergence from simple rules and systems. I feel there's not enough study of emergence from *complicated* systems and rulesets (since at least the social world is probably complicated as well as complex)

Yup. I wasn't thinking of that article specifically, but games with emergent mechanics are probably the top artificial example of what I was thinking of.
