Friend, homeowner: "When are you gonna buy a house?" Me, in my head: "I can't think of a single greater trap than home ownership. It's uninspected mass lunacy, giving away all your optionality for a big bauble that eventually destroys your perspective." Me, out loud: "Someday."

I mean the model of buying a home at 25 and owning it 55 is dead in much of the country but if you don’t buy you have to set aside 20 or 30 or 40 years’ worth of rent for retirement somehow which isn’t generally possible in the areas where home ownership is prohibitive either...

Lots of fun stuff. (Now I want to model it for our area.)

The bank won't drop a letter in your mailbox saying "I'm terminating your 5-year rental agreement where you used your holidays to move and spent thousands to make the move happen, just 7 months in because I'm getting a divorce and need a place to live.

Or that they’re retiring and selling all their properties so you need to find somewhere else to live in 30 days because oh by the way they’ve already sold the house you’re living in.

Eh... it's a stretch to say that the bank is the land lord. They do receive money for the property, but it's not going down a perfectly smooth hole... some of it collects along the outcroppings on the sides, and they're not allowed to drop by or stop you from doing repairs.
