"UML IS ALMOST ALWAYS A BAD SOLUTION TO THE WRONG COMMUNICATION PROBLEM!" I scream into the void, hoping to alleviate my frustrations but almost certainly making everything worse.
More the latter. But also the tendency to want to stuff more and more detail in the diagrams, and tends towards massive duplication.

Oh, for sure. When I sketch out a design I use a very small subset of the language with a focus on relations over things you might as well read in the code.

Yea. When it turns more into a communications requirement rather than a narrow aid, it tends to pure cost.
