I don't know how to solve the problem of a human that is wrong, but thinks they are right and then wants to tell other people about it. The most challenging part is that human could be me.

That's why I like Simon's research program and his "scissors analogy." There isn't much we can do for people being wrong. But, to be wrong sustainably, you need a social environment that helps the error persist. Social media is very good at forging those.pic.twitter.com/zJDpofnBW4

Also, here's a recent article that is a good map for recent literature on the peer-influence of opinion formation from
@Liz_Suhay and@BenjaminToff. Once the belief starts becoming part of your identity by social means, it's got a deep gravity well.https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/monkey-cage/wp/2018/07/12/how-worried-are-you-about-an-impending-trade-war-that-might-depend-on-what-your-fellow-party-members-think/ …1 reply 0 retweets 2 likes -

(P.S. I don't know how much of this you know via learning about polling in your research area, so forgive me if this is all old news to you.)

Imagine an atheist promoting atheism in a theocratic society. Atheism is probably genuinely harmful in a society extensively organized around religion principles. e.g. Authorities might say look at this person who became depressed after hearing your bad beliefs.

Yea, that's why the anti-vax movement is so confusing for me -- it's almost exactly at my point of indecision. I think companies making the decision to ban these groups is dangerously chilling and precedent setting. So I don't want that.

I think it breaks down to a *very* common dilemma, the one you alluded to to open this thread. - I can identify a specific problem (anti-vaxx groups); and, - I cannot identify a general solution.

To me the problem is we have gotten more and more impatient with the fact that not everything is science or engineering. Every person with the 'right' answer is determined to force it on everybody ... basically because we are all trying to be perfect little tools for capitalism!

The anti-vaxx movement isn't just wrong, it's inefficient. I think the inefficiency is probably considered the greater transgression.

Are you using "inefficient" here in a specific technical sense? (Non-statistician/-sociologist here.) I don't see how it applies.

We're all trying to wring out the last drops of our time, efforts, and energy. Maximize, maximize, maximize! It tends to pathology. Increasingly, human systems have no slack.pic.twitter.com/v5aPx9qSVZ

How is it possible to isolate the effects of a single activity on the corporate/business side, to tell whether or not it's leading to felt (in)efficiency for consumers? The systems are far too complex for me to put any significant trust in asserted chains of causation.
